This Mother's Day we want to celebrate with some of our fantastic brands run by amazing mums! As small businesses, the support from each other can be what gets us through this crazy ride of parenting, running a business and 'being an adult!'
We've got together (with lots of help from Lara & Ollie) with 13 brands, all stocked under our roof – and we're offering one lucky mama 15 prizes worth over £400! This is such an amazing prize - I actually want to keep it for myself. But I won't.
13 is unlucky you say??… NOT HERE! We're offering ONE LUCKY MAMA the chance to win EVERYTHING IN THIS PICTURE from 13 FAB BRANDS which can be found on the virtual shelves of THIS MODERN LIFE. Dads, feel free to enter too, there isn't much that would get you more appreciation on Mother's Day than winning this lot!
At This Modern Life we have the privilege of working with some amazing mothers within the industry who produce incredible products and ranges. We asked them to share a little bit about themselves so we could find out their passions and inspirations and hear about what they will be doing on Mother’s Day.
This Modern Life
Here at This Modern Life – I (Suzanne) set the business up nearly 6 years ago, shortly after having my first child Sammuel. I really struggled to find what I was looking for to decorate his nursery, and had dreams of setting up a shop to sell everything you could need for a modern nursery. My other half Danny insists the whole idea was his, and I have him to thank for it, but I don't quite remember it like that! A lot has happened since then… my little family has grown to 5, alongside my team at TML which has grown to 13 including my sister who's just become a mum (right) and my mum (left). The product range has grown so much too. On Mother's Day I will be mostly sleeping, hopefully woken up (not by being jumped on) for a lovely lunch and maybe a film with my children - we have all been a bit ill and busy lately so we need a nice relaxed day together to reconnect. Sammuel has already given me the card and flowers he made, because he just couldn't wait until Sunday!
|Surya Sajnani is the talented illustrator and designer behind Wee Gallery. The company was conceived when their son was born 15 years ago and they could not find beautiful stimulation toys for babies. On Mother's Day they will choose something low key and relaxing like a movie or dinner out - either try out a new restaurant or revisit an old favourite together :)
Wee Gallery are giving away the puzzle blocks, which are a favourite because they do many things, they look pretty displayed on a nursery shelf, as well as help babies with their visual and motor skills, and eventually put a simple puzzle together.
Lindsey from Wildfire Teepees is an ex buyer, baby baker and Wildfire Teepee maker. Having spent 15 years working as a buyer for The White Company, she embarked on her second maternity leave and didn’t want to try and juggle a very inflexible career with 2 boys so needed a plan B. She made her first son Marlo a black and white striped teepee for his first birthday and it had worked so well that friends asked her to make one for them. Then friends of friends started asking... and so it began! Plan B had been found and Wildfire Teepees was born. On Mother's Day Lindsey will probably be having a leisurely pub lunch with friends – a favourite way to spend a Sunday!
Wildfire Teepees are giving away a bean bag – because it's the perfect seat to keep little bottoms still so you can drink that well earned cup of tea!
Wonder & Rah’s designer and owner Natalie Cardew, started her company for several reasons. Whilst at home after having her second child she needed a creative outlet, so decided to return to illustration as well as creating her own brand.
On Mothers Day – Natalie is choosing the family day trip and heading to the Hockney exhibition first (ambitious with a 2 and 4-year-old) then lunch somewhere nice.
Sarah and Jon are the founders of Buddy and Bear, husband and wife, graphic designers and parents to two little boys (and one cat called Buddy). The brand began when Sarah was on maternity leave with their eldest, Sammy (almost 3). They noticed a gap in the market for practical, beautiful products that could be enjoyed by kids and adults alike, every day. Sarah wanted a project and had dreamed of creating something together, so started designing a range of playful items for the family home.
On Mother’s Day the family will be keeping the day clear which is a rare treat! Perhaps with a sunny stroll or a lazy lunch and nothing is more perfect than a homemade card!
Buddy and Bear and have offered a Yay tray – as all mothers deserve a Yay!
Noodoll relish bringing characters to life and sending them out into the world! The company was established by designer Yiying Wang in 2009 and began as an illustrated book featuring a cast of monsters who were made from rice and noodles. Noodoll now make a host of products featuring happy Ricemonsters including plush toys, stationery and accessories sold to over 500 stores worldwide.
On mother’s day, the team will be spending a day with their mom’s, treating them to some of their favourite things.
Noodoll offered a Ricepeach which is the latest new addition to the Ricefruit family, which mums will no doubt love.
Ingrid Petrie runs Ingrid Petrie Design from her home studio, which was the spare room. With two kids (aged 1 and 5) it quite often means working when they are in bed, lots of late nights! She started the business 3 years ago after massively reassessing life goals when she became a mummy for the first time. It's a common story - many of us relate too. On Mother's Day, Ingrid is aiming for lots of scribbles and cuddles (they are still very small). The eldest does love to draw and is learning to write, she's very prolific and has apparently already a pile of pictures and letters for Sunday.
The penguin print is so popular and loved by all ages within the family, old and young! It's got a lot of character and is a favourite of Ingrid's.
Madeline is the name behind Lapin and Me and started her company after encouragement from her daughter to 'just get on with it'. On Mother's Day, she will be taken out for a lunch by her daughter followed by evening drinks with her son. The swan is a sweet treat for mothers and children to share.
Anna & Lesley are 2 London mamas who set up and run Lara & Ollie teething jewellery. Having met 3 years ago through their local NCT, just before kids (Lara & Ollie) arrived. They both loved jewellery but realised when they became mums that they couldn’t wear it - not only was it dangerous, they didn’t want anything nice broken! They loved the concept of teething jewellery but couldn’t find much they liked. So they sourced some beads and made a few to wear and everywhere they went mums wanted to know where to get them from. How exciting to see where the journey has taken them.
Mothers day weekend coincides with Ollie's 3rd birthday and the in-laws golden wedding anniversary so Lesley will be spending it with both mums - both of whom will be receiving the fail-safe Jo Malone! Anna will be travelling to the French Alps for a week skiing en famille and happens to be taking mum and mother in law too (plus dads etc). Presents will also probably also be Jo Malone from the airport!
The prize of the 'Grace' necklace has been with them since day one and is one of the first necklace designs they agreed on. It continues to be a best seller and one they both wear a lot!
Keira O'Mara, 39 1/2(!!!) and single mama of two. She launched Mama Designs with her first product Mamascarf in 2008 after feeling self conscious breastfeeding in public and not being able to find a cover to buy. 8 1/2 years on and she has a whole range of stylish practical products for mamas and babies.
Keira usually gets her mum a plant for her garden as she is a keen gardener. Keira will be spending Mother's Day with her children, hopefully going out for brunch as she is definitely not cooking!
Mama Designs are giving away their new monochrome pineapple swaddles for the Mother's Day competition, as who doesn't love pineapples. We need to stock these beauties!
Miniwilla is the brainchild of Sandra who lives in Sweden with her husband and 2 kids, Della and Wille. The company started when Sandra was on maternity leave with her daughter Della and she got a bit restless. The rest is history! In Sweden Mother's Day is at the end of May - but when it comes around, Sandra would love to be spoilt with breakfast in bed and perhaps some fresh flowers.
Egle is a 34 year old mother of two boys. She is also the creator of Mini Learners, a nursery decor brand based in Lithuania. She simply loves creating posters for kids and finds it very rewarding to know that her designs are decorating nurseries across the globe. The company started about 3 1/2 years ago. Egle created all the imagery and after receiving lots of great feedback for the illustrations she decided to turn them into prints. Turning it into a business was a conscious but easy decision, as it involved doing what she really loved - all the time, rather than just a hobby.
On Mothers Day, Egle and her boys will be catching up with her own mother ensuring that she is thoroughly spoilt.
Offering the Don't Grow Up print - Don't Grow Up is one of Egle's life mottos! It's even more important for parents to be kids at heart sometimes and enjoy ourselves just like our little ones do! Let's not take life too seriously, have fun, jump on beds, laugh and be kind to each other!
Céline Vanden Broecke is the brainchild behind play and go bags, which started 3 years ago when she found it hard to find great storage for toys. On Mother's Day, she will be relaxing and trying to do as little as possible.
A big high five to all of the incredible brands who have put up some amazing prizes and also for sharing their journeys with us. All of us at This Modern Life salute you!
